Hi, I'm Ashleigh and I recently returned from my USA WEP exchange!   I was placed in a small country town called Point Pleasant, West Virginia, with a small population of about 4000. It was a very conservative area compared to what I was used to back home, which took some time to adjust to but was a great way to learn a new perspective but even still, the people were so kind and welcoming which I think comes from the small town community!   The first few weeks of my WEP exchange were very exciting yet scary. I was just trying to find my feet in a new place and get to know my host family, especially my host sister who I was very close to. I started school and went to the Mason County Fair which was really great. I also joined the school cheer leading team with my sister which lead to my very first American friends!   My three top tips for anyone going on exchange to the USA are:
  1.  Take advantage of all of the activities that your school provides Join a club or a sports team, maybe the choir or theatre program because you will meet lots of friends there.
  2. Always say YES to new experiences! Try that that new food or even just go to Walmart with your host mom if she asks!
  3. Don’t make too many expectations for your exchange to look like the movies. Sometimes it can, but by making expectations about what your school may be like, it may lead to some disappointment and a bad start.
If you are planning to go on a WEP exchange to the USA, I wish you good luck and I hope you love it because I definitely did!   Oh and one last thing, try the s’mores flavored Pop Tarts!

Is a short term student exchange right for me? a. you are in year nine, 10 or 11 b. you can’t miss much Australian schooling! On a short term WEP exchange you'll depart in November or December and return in January for the new school year! Short term programs are awesome because:

  • they're less than 90 days, so they provide a fantastic taste of student exchange
  • you'll get to experience Christmas overseas
  • your Christmas might involve snow
  • you'll make memories and skills for life!
Most WEP destinations offer short term exchange programs. Some of our favourites are:
  • Italy (because there's no language requirement, the food is incredible and Italian Christmas traditions extend until early January!)
  • France (because you can choose between a traditional exchange or an area option)
  • Norway (because this European gem has got to be one of the most beautiful countries on earth!)
Application deadlines for programs commencing this November/December are already beginning to close! Given that it takes three weeks to complete an application you better get a wriggle on! Start your application by clicking here.
