Generally speaking, from year 1 to 6 students attend elementary school, followed by high school which incorporates grades 7-12 and caters to students aged 12 to 18. However, each Canadian province has its own peculiarities, such as in Québec, where school ends a year earlier (year 11). School is compulsory until age 16 or 18, depending on the province or territory. At the end of secondary school, Canadian students obtain a graduation diploma allowing them to access higher education.

At this point, students can continue with a community college or vocational school, offering practical, hands-on learning, or with university to obtain a Bachelors, Masters or PhD degree. Canada is an international research leader and has some of the top universities in the world.
