Where Asia and Europe meet...

There is a swim across the Bosphorus Sea where it is possible to cross from Asia to Europe, which is only four kilometres! From the capital of Turkey, it is possible to see where the two continents meet.  Compared to other European and Asian countries, tourism in Turkey is a relatively new phenomenon! Turkish people are very welcoming of foreigners and are hospitable by nature. In some shops and many homes, a hot or cold glass of traditional apple tea (‘cay’) is offered to visitors on arrival, to put them at ease. They are always willing to receive guests, even without a phone call!

Food and drink is a big part of the culture – Turkey is basically self sustainable thanks to it’s proximity to Asia and Europe so you can enjoy a lot of fresh produce! A typical Turkish breakfast is a plate of bread, fresh tomatoes, cucumber, olives and delectable soft white cheese. Other meals include plates of ‘mezze’ – stuffed vine leaves, peppers and chickpea hummus, and larger dishes like fresh fish in coastal areas or meats such as lamb kebab. Food is often served with rice flavoured with currants and pinenuts. Meals are always to be shared, eaten while sitting down and never ‘on the go’!

As well as a rich cuisine, Turkey offers a fascinating history – from the ancient ruins of Ephesus and Troy to the stories of the ANZACs at Gallipoli. Students will enjoy dynamic family life – many traditional families living with three generations under one roof, and reputable school system with many choices.
